DTF COOL PEEL – IRON AND HEAT PRESS APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prep

  • Set iron to Cotton/Linen (highest heat), with no water and steam turned OFF and preheat at least 5 minutes.
  • Set the heat press to 320-325 degrees, using medium/firm 40-60 PSI pressure.
  • Work on a hard surface (counter/table). Ironing board is ok, without heavy padding.

2. Place Transfer

  • Iron the surface a bit to warm it up and help eliminate any moisture in it.
  • Position design on surface.
  • Cover with parchment paper or a teflon sheet, if protecting the surface from the iron is needed. It is not required for the transfer.

3. Press in sections, keeping the iron or heat press still each time:

  • Press with firm downward pressure (use body weight).
  • Hold each section 20–25 seconds. For smooth surfaces, do not let the iron slide or move the transfer. You can use heat tape to help secure the transfer.
  • Make sure to press all edges, using the center of the iron. Overlapping presses so every area gets full heat.
  • A heat press with locking arm should be set to 40-60 PSI. Follow manufacturer directions.

4. Cool Peel

  • Let the design cool to the touch, at least.
  • Slowly peel the film from a corner.
  • If any edge of the image lifts, lay film back down and re-press that area, and cool again before peeling.

5. Second Press

  • Place parchment paper or a teflon sheet over the design.
  • Press again for 10–15 seconds with firm pressure.

Fabric care Instructions

  • Turn inside out to wash.
  • Cold wash.
  • Hang dry or low heat.

** These instructions above are also provided in print with every order.

How to apply UV Stickers

Reminder: these stickers are made for hard surfaces like glass, metal, or plastic. If applying to wood, be aware the cover sheet is sticky and might pull off paint or pieces of the wood.

Tool needed: Something to scrape over the sticker like a credit card, squeegee, or other scraper tool.

  1. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol and let dry.
  2. Use the tool to scrape over the front of your sticker and the back of the white backer sheet before application.
  3. Line up the sticker where you want to apply it.
  4. Pull the backer sheet away and apply the sticker and cover sheet to your surface. Either apply from the center and evenly smooth the sticker down moving toward the outside edges, or begin at one end and smooth it down moving toward the opposite end.
  5. Rub (or use the tool) to burnish the sticker firmly against the surface before peeling.
  6. Peel off the clear cover sheet slowly. Pull it away by laying it as flat as possible against the cover sheet that is still on the surface rather than pulling straight away from the surface. ** Peel slowly, and if any part of the sticker does not stay against the surface, lay the cover sheet back down and burnish it more.
  7. Once the cover sheet is removed, burnish over the sticker that has been applied to your surface with your fingers or the tool.
  8. Let it cure about 24 hours before washing or heavy use.

FAQ’s

What can I put iron on transfers on?

You can apply them to a porous surface that can allow moisture to evaporate from underneath the transfer as you press it. Ideal surfaces are cotton, ployester, or blended fabric that can withstand 325 degrees from an iron or heat press (t-shirts, tote bags, aprons, baby onesies, fabric banners, etc). You can also apply them to paper and wood. For wood, make sure it is smooth. If you want to paint it first, the paint must be water-based (I prefer chalk paint) and completely dry/cured. If there is any moisture still in the paint, your transfer will not stick.

Do not apply to slick, non-porous surfaces like glass, ceramic, metal, or plastic. Or to wood that has wax or oil based products applied to it.

What can I put UV stickers on?

UV stickers are made to apply on hard surfaces that are not flexible, like glass, plastic, and metal, without any special finish. If applying to a sublimation surface, it helps to sand over the surface to rough up the special sublimation coating that is usually applied.

Can I sell the items I make with your transfers?

Yes. I do ask that you inform the customer of where you purchased the transfer, and that it is not your own design.

You cannot sell the transfers. They must be applied to a surface, as a finished product.

What do you do with personal images customers sent you to use in transfers?

I will hold onto the images in case that customer wishes to re-order more transfers of them, unless the customer requests they be deleted. I do not use those images in any designs or transfers that the image owner has not requested.

* any licensed image will only be used if the rights to use it have been obtained.

How do you charge your customization fees?

I first collaborate with the customer about the design request, and inform them of the fee to be applied. Additional requests may alter that fee. Once the design is complete and approved by the customer, the fee will be included on the customer invoice with the transfer order. If the customer does not approve the designs and place an order, the fee is not charged.

Simple changes to existing designs are $2. Requests to create basic custom designs are $10. Requests for custom designs involving purchasing a digital image, elaborately altering an image, or creating a detailed image are $15.

Can you make a finished product for me with your transfers?

I produce finished pieces on an individual basis, based on the resources and time available to me. You can send me your requests, anytime.

Why did my transfer not stick to the surface?

Let’s look at each part of the process.

Surface - texture can be a factor.

  • For wood, it must be smooth. If painted, the paint (only water-based) must be fully cured with no moisture. A wood surface can cause the coversheet to expand and buckle during pressing, be prepared for this and adjust as needed. Also, you may need to re-press sections.
  • Fabric needs to be soft and smooth. T-shirt fabric is ideal, anything heavier, more rigid, or thicker may require longer pressing, more pressure, or higher temps. Texture can require you to apply your handheld press or iron into the lower areas of the texture to make the transfer apply properly.

Iron/heatpress temperature. Your tool needs to consistently stay around 320-325 degrees. Too cool, and the transfer will not adhere. Too hot, and the adhesive may degrade (not as common, unless your tool temps really spike). The only way I have found to test this is to lay the tool down on your heatsafe surface after pre-heating for at least 5 minutes, putting the metal end of a meat htermometer under the tool and waiting until it reaches the highest reading, and watching for consistency. You may need to adjust the temperature or use a different tool if temparatures are not consistently in that range.

Do not apply these DTF transfers to plastic, metal, or similar surfaces that are not porous enough to allow evaporation of moisture from under the transfer.

Peeling process. You must wait 30-60 seconds or longer to let the transfer and surface cool. It must at least be cool enough to safely touch and lay your hand on without being to warm. Peeling too soon will cause the transfer to pull off of the surface, or stretch. Also, peel slowly, and stop if you see the transfer lift from the surface. Put the coversheet back down and re-press that section, allowing it too cool again.

Pressure is key. Your transfer will not apply properly if you use a sweeping light motion like when ironing garments. You must press down on the tool and keep it still for each section of pressing, or use medium/firm (40-60 PSI) settings on a heatpress with a locking arm.

Tips to try:

  1. Pre-press. Press your surface for 10-20 seconds before laying down your transfer. This warms the surface, removes wrinkles, and eliminates hidden moisture.
  2. Use a teflon sheet or parchment paper when pressing. This can help even out the temperatures.
  3. Press on a more firm surface. If your ironing board has a plush or thick cover, it may not be firm enough to help the tool keep consistent pressure against the transfer and surface. You can use a piece of wood, if needed. Also, if your surface has multiple layers (like a tote bag or sweatshirt), you can put the piece of wood, or the end of the ironing board or mat inbetween the layers. A teflon ironing mat can also help.
  4. Before peeling, take a soft cloth and rub over the coversheet with your fingers. This encourages the transfer to release from the coversheet.

UV Sticker tips and tricks

  • Avoid applying a solid design to a surface that curves in more than one direction. Designs with an open/transparent background are better. Or cut apart the design pieces that will be applied to a surface that is rounded in more than one direction. Apply those separated pieces individually.
  • Be sure to clean your surface as instructed. Oils from your hands, dust, or other residue will cause the stickers to come loose prematurely.
  • When removing the cover sheet, peel slowly and stop if any portion of the sticker does not stick to the surface. Reapply that portion and burnish well before attempting to remove the cover again.
  • If applying a large sticker, hold or tape it in place. Then pull back one edge and begin removing the backer sheet. Stop and cut off about an inch or so of the paper backer. Then lay the cover sheet and sticker down and begin burnishing the exposed area. Move the opposite end and lift it off of the surface, laying it back over the expose edge you already applied. Slowly peel the backer sheet from the exposed end and smooth down the cover sheet and sticker as you move across the surface.
  • If you plan to wash the finished piece, wait at least 24 hours, and alwasy gently handwash. Do not soak in water and do not place in dishwasher for cleaning.
